With the use of gunpowder and cannons the fudeal world could no longer hide in their castles. A single cannon had the potential to destroy the walls with only few shots.
Gunpowder was invented not discovered. And it was the chinesse that acomplished this and used it in war. But the Mongols were the ones to use it effectivly to its full potential. They were the first to use it in cannons. Although they based most of their taktics on horse mounted archers cannons were extremly valuable in takeing cities, even some of the best deffenses of the time stood no chance against the power of these machines.
This soon caught on in the Muslim and Islamic empires of the time because without cannons you cant defend yourself against them. This also lead to people needing stronger defenses to protect their cities. All of this was very expensive by the way. And the poser of cannons could not stay away from European hands for long.
